Our Teaching Philosophy
At Burlingame Country Club, we believe golf instruction should be as unique as the individual holding the club. Our teaching approach combines time-tested fundamentals with innovative techniques tailored to your personal learning style, physical capabilities, and goals.
What sets our instructors apart is their commitment to creating a supportive environment where improvement happens naturally. Rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all method, our professionals take the time to understand your current abilities and aspirations before developing a customized plan to enhance your skills.
We recognize that golf is more than just a physical game—it’s a mental challenge that teaches patience, strategy, and resilience. As one member beautifully put it, our instructors “teach us to subdue a monster with a seven iron,” building confidence that extends beyond the course.
Our instruction program embraces three core principles:
Personalized Approach
No two golfers are alike. We assess your natural tendencies and build upon your strengths while addressing areas for improvement, ensuring that lessons feel natural rather than forcing uncomfortable changes.
Holistic Development
True improvement comes from developing all aspects of your game—from driving to putting, course management to mental focus. Our comprehensive approach ensures balanced skill development.
Enjoyable Progress
Golf should be fun! We create an atmosphere where learning happens through enjoyable practice, meaningful feedback, and celebrating improvements both large and small.
Head Golf Professional Profiles
The leadership of our instruction team brings exceptional credentials and experience to Burlingame Country Club. Each head professional contributes unique expertise while sharing our commitment to personalized, member-focused teaching.
James Thornton, PGA Director of Golf
With over 25 years of experience at premier mountain courses, James oversees all aspects of our golf program. A Class A PGA Professional since 1997, his teaching philosophy centers on building consistent, repeatable swings that work under pressure. James specializes in helping established players refine their course management skills and mental approach to lower their handicaps.
“My goal is to help members understand their own swing tendencies rather than trying to copy professionals. When you know your patterns, you can make adjustments that last beyond a single lesson.”
Amanda Chen, PGA Head Teaching Professional
Amanda joined Burlingame after an impressive collegiate career and five years teaching at nationally-ranked resort courses. Her approach blends traditional fundamentals with biomechanical insights gained from her certification in TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) analysis. Amanda’s students appreciate her clear communication and ability to simplify complex concepts.
Her specialty lies in helping players who feel stuck in their development, offering fresh perspectives that often lead to breakthrough improvements. Members particularly value Amanda’s on-course playing lessons that translate practice range improvements to real scoring situations.
Robert Galloway, PGA Assistant Professional
Robert brings a unique background as both a former touring professional and certified club fitter. His understanding of equipment optimization gives members an edge in selecting and adjusting their clubs for maximum performance. Robert’s lessons often incorporate technology while maintaining a focus on feel and playability.
With particular expertise in the short game, Robert has developed a series of practice routines that members can use between lessons to continue improving. His patient approach makes him especially popular with newer golfers looking to build confidence.
PGA HOPE Program Specialists
Burlingame Country Club proudly supports the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program, a national initiative that introduces golf to military veterans with disabilities as a means of enhancing their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being.
Several of our teaching professionals have completed specialized training to work with veterans and service members through adaptive golf techniques. This important work exemplifies our belief that golf offers benefits far beyond recreation—it builds community, confidence, and healing.
Adaptive Teaching Techniques
Our PGA HOPE specialists are trained in modifying traditional golf instruction to accommodate various physical capabilities. Whether adapting stance for balance issues, modifying grip techniques, or recommending specialized equipment, these professionals ensure that golf remains accessible to all who wish to play.
Program Structure
The PGA HOPE program at Burlingame offers a structured introduction to golf fundamentals through a series of group lessons. Veterans progress from basics to on-course play in a supportive environment that emphasizes camaraderie as much as skill development.
As participants advance, they have opportunities to join regular club events and competitions, becoming fully integrated into the Burlingame community. The transition from military service to civilian life finds a friendly path through our shared love of golf.
Community Impact
The relationships formed through this program extend well beyond golf lessons. Our PGA HOPE participants often develop lasting friendships with instructors and fellow members, creating a support network that enhances quality of life.
Members interested in supporting this program through volunteering or sponsorship opportunities can contact our golf shop for more information.
Junior Golf Development Team
The future of golf at Burlingame thrives through our dedicated Junior Golf Development program. Our specialized coaching team understands that teaching young golfers requires more than just scaled-down adult instruction—it demands creativity, patience, and a genuine passion for nurturing young talent.
Age-Appropriate Instruction
Our junior program segments instruction by both age and ability, ensuring that each young golfer receives guidance appropriate to their developmental stage. From our “Little Linksters” (ages 5-7) focusing on fun fundamentals to our competitive team preparation for teenagers, the curriculum builds systematically.
Younger children learn through games and activities that develop coordination and basic skills, while older juniors receive more technical instruction balanced with on-course experience and friendly competition.
Summer Camps and Seasonal Programs
During summer months and school holidays, our comprehensive junior camps offer immersive golf experiences combined with other activities that highlight Burlingame’s mountain setting. These popular programs balance skill development with social interaction, creating memories that often span generations as former junior participants return with their own children.
Year-round weekend clinics provide continuity for local juniors, while our seasonal tournament preparation helps competitive players reach their goals.
Family Involvement
We recognize that junior golf flourishes when families participate together. Our parent-child events, family lesson packages, and multi-generational tournaments create opportunities for shared experiences on the course.
As one junior parent observed, “They’re not just teaching my daughter how to swing a club—they’re teaching her confidence, courtesy, and perseverance. The lessons go far beyond golf.”
Game Improvement Specialists
Beyond our head professionals, Burlingame offers access to specialists who focus on specific aspects of the game. These focused experts can complement your regular instruction with targeted improvement in areas that might be limiting your overall performance.
Short Game Mastery
Our short game specialist works exclusively on shots from 100 yards and in—often the quickest path to lower scores. Through structured practice protocols and situational coaching, members develop confidence in chips, pitches, bunker play, and those crucial up-and-downs that save rounds.
Regular short game clinics offer opportunities to address specific challenges in a small-group setting, while private sessions allow for personalized attention to your particular tendencies around the greens.
Putting Perfection
With greens that rival any mountain course in quality and challenge, Burlingame members benefit from our putting instructor’s expertise in reading slopes, controlling speed, and managing pressure. Using both traditional and technology-assisted analysis, our putting specialist can identify subtle patterns in your stroke and recommend practical adjustments.
The dedicated putting studio allows for year-round improvement regardless of weather conditions, with specialized tools for measuring consistency and accuracy.
Course Management Strategy
Sometimes the best improvement comes not from changing your swing but from making better decisions on the course. Our playing professionals offer on-course sessions that focus on strategy, club selection, and the mental aspects of scoring.
These playing lessons often reveal opportunities to improve course navigation and risk management, helping you make the most of your current abilities while developing a more thoughtful approach to each round.
Technology in Teaching
While Burlingame Country Club honors the traditions of golf, we embrace modern technology that enhances the learning experience and provides objective feedback. Our instructors skillfully balance high-tech analysis with the irreplaceable value of hands-on guidance and feel.
Video Analysis Systems
Our teaching professionals utilize high-definition video capture from multiple angles to provide visual feedback on your swing. Slow-motion replay and split-screen comparison with model swings help identify opportunities for improvement that might be impossible to detect with the naked eye.
After your lesson, key video segments can be shared via our secure platform, allowing you to review your progress and practice with specific visual cues in mind.
Launch Monitors and Ball Flight Analysis
State-of-the-art launch monitors provide precise data on ball flight, club delivery, and impact conditions. Rather than overwhelming you with numbers, our instructors translate this information into practical adjustments that produce immediate results.
Understanding the relationship between swing changes and ball flight helps develop a cause-and-effect awareness that accelerates improvement and builds consistency.
Putting Analysis Tools
Our putting lab features pressure plates that map weight distribution, stroke path tracking, and impact analysis to identify patterns in your putting stroke. This objective feedback often reveals subtle tendencies that explain missed putts and provides clear direction for improvement.
The combination of traditional putting fundamentals with this advanced analysis creates a comprehensive approach to mastering what many consider golf’s most important skill.
Lesson Packages & Programs
Burlingame offers flexible instruction options to accommodate different learning preferences, schedules, and goals. From single sessions addressing specific challenges to comprehensive improvement programs, our team will help you select the right option for your needs.
Individual Instruction
Private lessons provide the most personalized attention and fastest improvement for most golfers. Available in 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions, individual instruction can focus on any aspect of your game from full swing to short game, putting to course management.
Many members find that a regular schedule of lessons (such as bi-weekly or monthly) provides accountability and consistent progress, while others prefer to schedule sessions when specific issues arise.
Small Group Options
Share the learning experience with friends or family members through small group lessons (2-4 people) that combine personal attention with the social enjoyment of learning together. These sessions often create friendly competition that enhances motivation while reducing the cost per person.
Our professionals skillfully balance attention among participants, ensuring that everyone receives meaningful guidance despite the group setting.
Specialized Programs
Throughout the year, we offer focused clinics and multi-session programs addressing specific aspects of the game:
New Member Orientation: A complimentary introduction to our course, facilities, and instruction options, helping you get comfortable and connected.
Seasonal Tune-Ups: Prepare for the golf season with technical refreshers and practical tips for returning to form quickly.
Ladies’ Golf Association Support: Dedicated instruction coordinating with women’s events and play days, building skills and confidence in a supportive environment.
Senior Flexibility and Power: Specialized techniques for maintaining distance and precision as physical capabilities evolve over time.
Student Success Stories
The true measure of our instruction program lies in the improvement and enjoyment our members experience. These authentic stories reflect the range of goals and achievements that define success at Burlingame.
From Beginner to Confident Player
When Sarah joined Burlingame with her husband, she had never played golf. Intimidated by the game but wanting to share in her spouse’s passion, she began with our New Golfer program. “The instructors made me feel comfortable from day one,” she recalls. “They celebrated every small victory and kept the focus on fun while building my skills.”
Within a season, Sarah progressed from reluctant participant to enthusiastic player, eventually joining the 9-hole ladies’ group. Now three years later, she competes in club events and often beats her husband’s net score—much to his surprised delight.
Breaking Through a Plateau
“I had been stuck at a 12 handicap for what seemed like forever,” explains longtime member Michael. “No matter what I tried, I couldn’t seem to improve.” After a comprehensive evaluation with our head professional, Michael discovered that his perceived weaknesses weren’t actually the problem.
“They completely changed my practice routine to focus on course management rather than technical changes,” he says. “Within months, I dropped to a single-digit handicap for the first time in twenty years of playing.”
Junior Development Journey
Fourteen-year-old Emma began in our junior program at age seven with no previous exposure to golf. Her parents simply wanted an activity that would get her outdoors during summer visits to their Burlingame home. What started as casual participation grew into genuine passion as Emma connected with our junior coaches.
“The instructors made golf challenging but always fun,” her father notes. “They knew exactly when to push her and when to back off.” Now Emma competes at the regional level, captains her high school team, and mentors younger juniors in our summer programs—a full-circle journey that exemplifies our development philosophy.

Specialized Teaching Certifications
Beyond PGA credentials, our team members hold various specialized certifications that enhance their teaching capabilities:

Continuing Education

This commitment to growth ensures that Burlingame members benefit from both traditional wisdom and contemporary insights, receiving instruction that represents the best of both worlds.
Booking Your Perfect Instructor
Finding the right teaching professional can significantly impact your enjoyment and improvement in golf. At Burlingame, we facilitate thoughtful matching between members and instructors to create productive, long-term learning relationships.
Understanding Your Learning Style
People learn differently—some are visual learners who benefit from demonstration and video analysis, others are feel-oriented and respond best to sensory cues, while some prefer technical explanation and clear, logical progression. Our golf shop team can help identify which instructor’s communication style might best complement your learning preferences.
Scheduling Options
Lessons may be arranged through our online booking system, by phone, or in person at the golf shop. We recommend booking at least a week in advance for peak times, though our professionals make every effort to accommodate urgent requests when possible.
For new students, an initial evaluation session allows our pros to assess your current skills and discuss your goals before recommending a specific instruction plan. This consultation ensures efficient use of your time and appropriate focus on the aspects of your game that will yield the greatest improvement.
Preparing for Your Lesson
To maximize the value of your instruction time:
Arrive 15-20 minutes early to warm up properly
Bring all clubs you typically use, not just the ones you want to work with
Consider what specific challenges or goals you want to address
Be honest about practice time availability between lessons
Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather conditions
After your lesson, you’ll receive follow-up notes and practice recommendations to reinforce what you’ve learned, helping you make continued progress until your next session.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I book lessons?
For regular instruction, we recommend booking 7-10 days in advance, especially for popular times such as weekends and late afternoons. For specialized instructors or seasonal peak periods, earlier booking (2-3 weeks) may be necessary to secure your preferred time. Last-minute openings occasionally become available, so don’t hesitate to check for cancellations if you need a session on short notice.
Do you offer instruction for complete beginners?
Absolutely! We welcome golfers of all experience levels, including those who have never held a club before. Our New Golfer Program provides a supportive introduction to golf fundamentals, etiquette, and basic rules through a series of structured lessons. These sessions typically take place in a comfortable setting away from more experienced players, allowing you to learn at your own pace without pressure.
What is your cancellation policy for lessons?
We understand that schedules can change unexpectedly. We request 24-hour notice for lesson cancellations, which allows us to offer the time to other members. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice may be subject to a partial fee, while those cancelled with less than 4 hours’ notice may incur the full lesson charge. Weather cancellations initiated by our staff due to unsafe conditions never incur fees and will be rescheduled at your convenience.
